About the Course

Medication Administration for Community Health Workers (BC Edition)

Foundational Training in Safe Medication Support for Community Care

This course is designed to equip Community Health Workers (CHWs) in British Columbia with the essential knowledge and skills to assist in safe medication administration and support within home and community-based care settings. While CHWs in BC do not administer medications independently, they often work under the delegation or direction of licensed professionals such as Registered Nurses (RNs) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).

This training aligns with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry’s standards and prepares workers to contribute effectively to client wellness through proper medication assistance and observation.

Course Topics Include:

  • Overview of pharmacology and medication types commonly used in community settings

  • Interpreting medication labels, prescriptions, and packaging

  • Safe handling and storage of medications

  • Medication administration routes (oral, topical, eye/ear drops, etc.) under delegation

  • Infection prevention and hygiene during medication support

  • Recognizing and reporting side effects, errors, and allergic reactions

  • Documentation and communication protocols

  • Legal boundaries, scope of practice, and delegation under BC regulations

  • Client-centered approaches to medication adherence and education

  • Cultural safety and trauma-informed practices in medication support

Who Should Enroll:

  • Registered Care Aides and Community Health Workers in BC

  • Home Support Workers in publicly or privately funded settings

  • New CHW graduates seeking skills in medication support

  • Experienced CHWs transitioning to roles involving delegated medication tasks

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Confidently support clients in taking medications as part of a care plan

  • Accurately document and report medication-related issues

  • Follow safe procedures in assisting with medications under supervision

  • Recognize when to escalate concerns to a nurse or supervisor

  • Promote safe, respectful, and culturally competent care in medication assistance

Important Notes:

This course does not authorize independent medication administration, but supports CHWs in understanding their delegated roles and working effectively as part of the interdisciplinary team in accordance with BC’s health authority guidelines and employer-specific policies.
